The Artist & The Businessman
I got into a conversation with a potential client yesterday which centered around the struggle between art and business. This client had experienced in the past working with the stereotypical artist type who couldn’t be artistic within the scope of a business goal. The artist creates “art” and not a product to be sold for profit — or at least that was the impression of the client.
As a graphic designer and web developer, I’ve found myself caught between my artistic instinct and the bottom line. I think working within the advertising industry has just about put an end to the struggle. Now the question I ask is, “which solution is more profitable for the client – AND – keeps me in business. If it’s good for the client then it should also be good for me. Of course for any solution to be considered acceptable by me it must solve the problem and not cut corners.
I think it was probably 1998 when I stopped thinking of myself as an artistic person. I believe I’m a better designer/developer for making that realization too. Now I pride myself in creative solutions for business needs. Creativity is found within the boundries and limitations of a project. I’ve always been a more effective designer when the parameters are clearly defined. I believe just like any sport, design is more fun when their are boundries.
So if you are searching for a creative solution to solve a business need, let’s get in touch. I won’t work for free but I’ll make it my prime concern not to cost you any profit. Your investment in your business — through me — should lead to increased profits in a measurable way. I get to be creative and you get to be profitable… sound like a plan?
